Smart Columbus
In 2016, Columbus, Ohio was given the title of “Smart City“ by the United States Department of Transportation from the Smart City Challenge. As part of this challenge, this Department invited cities across the nation to propose new solutions to urban transportation problems. This city won due to its vision on integrating advanced technology, sustainable mobility, and equitable access for all residents. So, Columbus was given a $40 million grant to execute this plan.
The major theme of this plan is transforming the transportation systems in this city through technology. One major piece of technology is intelligent transportation systems, which work through a network of sensors, cameras, and real-time data analytics. This technology allows for the tracking of traffic patterns, and optimization of traffic flow through street lights. Also, Columbus’ smart infrastructure includes automated traffic signals, which connect with vehicles to reduce delays on the roads.
Another part of this plan is sustainability, which has been done by expanding electric vehicle infrastructure. Various charging stations were installed throughout the city, which also required an expansion of energy infrastructure. Also, Columbus implemented electric shuttles, buses, and bike sharing.
Many of these new forms of infrastructure required advanced partnerships from many groups. Groups such as IBM and Cisco helped with the development of transportation-optimizing technology. Also, companies such as Honda directly provided transportation technology.
While some progress in Smart Columbus was halted by the COVID-19 Pandemic, this city stands as a model for other cities across the United States. This real-life scenario shows that this integration isn’t just possible, but it’s also essential for many new developments. As cities across the country face the pressures of environmental challenges, this city provides a roadmap to how cities can begin integrating technology into infrastructure to create more sustainable transportation, and in turn create lasting change.
