How to Ensure the Stability of a Structure

One of the many jobs of structural and geotechnical engineers is to ensure the safety of the people inside a building. But what are some ways that they achieve such safety?

The first way that they do this is through the use of a central core. By starting with a central core, and surrounding the rest of a structure around such core, the building will become increasingly stiff. This creates a building that is ensured by the other parts of the structure, and in turn increases the strength of the building.

Another way which safety can be achieved is through the stabilization of soil. After analyzing the soil, geotechnical engineers can analyze if the soil can handle the pressure of a large scale building. If it is not strong enough, engineers will implement mechanical techniques, such as bonding soil particles together, to increase the strength of the soil. Also, they may implement mechanical techniques, such as implementing a stronger structure underneath, in order to strengthen the soil.

The third way which civil engineers ensure the safety of structures is by using specific shapes in their structures. In particular, engineers may choose to implement triangles in their structure, which distributes both gravitational and environmental (earthquakes) factors that may jeopardize the structure’s integrity. As a result, the engineer creates a building that makes a building stable and strong.
